Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated (Global ACI) has published transition requirements for moving from ISO 14001:2015, including Amendment 1:2024, to ISO 14001:2026. The transition period ends on 30 April 2029.
Accreditation bodies must be ready to conduct assessments against ISO 14001:2026 by 31 October 2026 at the latest. Accredited certification bodies must submit their transition declaration and supporting information by 31 January 2027 at the latest. Decisions on the transition of certification bodies to the new edition must be completed by 30 April 2027 at the latest.
From 31 October 2027, new and initial accredited certificates may only be issued according to ISO 14001:2026. Organisations already certified against ISO 14001:2015 must have transitioned by 30 April 2029 at the latest. This can take place during a regular surveillance or recertification audit, or through a separate transition audit.
According to Global ACI, ISO 14001:2026 builds on the existing framework. The new edition provides, among other things, clearer guidance and greater emphasis on climate change, biodiversity, efficient use of resources, leadership, governance, and the integration of environmental management into business operations and value chains. The transition requirements are mandatory for signatories to the Global ACI Multilateral Recognition Arrangement and their accredited certification bodies within the applicable scope.
