What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. In English: Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OH&S). The standard describes requirements for a systematic approach to healthy and safe working.
ISO 45001 helps you create and ensure a safe working environment.
Who is ISO 45001 relevant for?
Construction companies, manufacturers, logistics and other sectors where physical safety plays a role. Often combined with VCA. You mostly find ISO 45001 in these sectors: industry, construction and infrastructure, logistics, facility services, healthcare, chemicals and petrochemicals.
Which themes does ISO 45001 cover?
- Industrial accidents
- Absenteeism due to work-related causes
- Occupational diseases and health complaints

How does the path to ISO 45001 work?
At every step you see which partner can help. Only the internal and the external audit are mandatory.

Maintain your management system
Tooling keeps your documents, risks and actions organised. That also makes it easier for the auditor.
Tooling - Mandatory
Internal audit: the mock exam
To prepare for the external audit, you test whether your management system works. This is often done by an independent expert.
Internal auditor - Mandatory
External audit: the final exam
A certification body assesses whether you meet the standard. It is never the same party that did your internal audit. Pass it and you are certified.
Certification body - Mandatory
Every year again
A management system is not a one-off project. Every year brings an internal audit and a surveillance audit, with recertification after three years. Every year you can reassess your provider, and you can always switch without losing your certificate.

Why compare quotes through CertificeerWijzer?
For the same standard, the price can differ by up to 75%, depending on the providers you choose. That difference can be explained, because paths differ more than you think: in how much you do yourself and how much you hand over, in the quality of the tooling, in the specialisation of the certification body, in how soon a party can support you and in the certifications of the providers themselves.
So when comparing, do not look at price alone, but also at these factors:
- Price of the whole path Compare the costs over the full three-year cycle, not just the first quote.
- Specialisation in your sector A partner who knows your industry asks the right questions and understands your processes.
- Norms and values Pragmatic or thorough, on site or remote: a partner that fits the way you work.
- Capacity A partner with time when you need it, so your deadline or tender is not at risk.
- International recognition Working with clients abroad? Then the name and reputation of your partners matter.
- Qualifications An accredited certification body, a qualified auditor and a consultant with proven experience, so the result is recognised.
We know the providers personally. We are in direct contact with every connected provider, so we have the most up-to-date information on their prices, specialisations, approach, certifications and availability.

Frequently asked questions about ISO 45001
What is ISO 45001 certification?
ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. A certificate shows that your company has organised healthy and safe working systematically. The standard helps prevent accidents, absenteeism and occupational diseases.
Is ISO 45001 mandatory?
No, ISO 45001 is voluntary. A risk inventory and evaluation (RI&E) is mandatory under the Dutch Working Conditions Act, and ISO 45001 helps you meet that obligation systematically. Commercially, clients in construction, industry and petrochemicals often ask for it.
Who may certify ISO 45001?
Only accredited certification bodies may issue ISO 45001 certificates. Accreditation can be from the Dutch accreditation body, UKAS (UK), DAkkS (Germany) or other IAF members. Through the IAF agreement all these certificates are recognised internationally.
What is the difference between ISO 45001 and VCA?
ISO 45001 is an internationally recognised management system for all sectors. VCA is a regional checklist (NL, BE, LU) specifically for higher-risk sectors such as construction and petrochemicals. ISO 45001 describes 'what' you need to organise, VCA describes 'how'. Many construction companies have both.
What is the difference with OHSAS 18001?
OHSAS 18001 was the predecessor of ISO 45001 and has no longer been valid since 30 September 2021. ISO 45001 follows the High Level Structure (like ISO 9001 and 14001), puts more focus on leadership and worker participation, and requires a broader context analysis.
Can I combine ISO 45001 with other standards?
Yes, ISO 45001 shares the same structure (High Level Structure) with ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 27001 (information security). This makes integrated audits possible, which saves time and costs.
