Three routes to a management system

An adviser is not mandatory for any ISO certification. For every standard you first build a management system: the agreements on how you work, recorded and in use. An adviser mainly takes over the research and the writing. What the auditor assesses, you do yourself.

RouteWhat you doWhat the adviser doesWhen it pays off
Do it yourself Everything: someone in your company reads the standard, makes the agreements and guards the process. The least money, the most own hours. Nothing Someone already knows the standard, you already work with fixed agreements, or you add a second standard to an existing system.
Partial help You build it yourself. Part of it: a training on the standard, the internal audit as an outsider, or software for your documents and records. The middle route many companies choose: build it yourself, with a training beforehand and an outsider for the internal audit.
Full support Working as agreed, your records, the management review, receiving the auditor and resolving nonconformities. From start to certificate: explaining the requirements, drafting documents, doing or preparing the internal audit and preparing you for the audit. No knowledge in house, little time because of client work, or a fixed deadline.

An adviser mainly shortens the build-up. The at least three months your system runs and the waiting time at the certification body do not get shorter, so also request quotes from certification bodies right away when working with an adviser. How many own hours a project takes depends on your company, your standard and your starting point.

What is and is not allowed

A certification body must be impartial. ISO/IEC 17021-1 requires this, and the accreditation body checks it.

SituationAllowed?Why
Your certification body helps build your system No Writing manuals or procedures, or tailored solutions, is not allowed for the certification body. This also applies to the rest of the legal entity.
General explanation or a training by your certification body Yes As long as it contains no solution for your company.
An adviser linked to your certification body After 2 years The recognised way: the certification body certifies your system only two years after the advice ended. Another equally strong measure is also allowed.
Your former adviser as auditor After 2 years The certification body only deploys that person on your audits two years after the advice ended.
A guarantee on the certificate No The certification body decides on the certificate, someone other than the auditor. No adviser can promise it.

That is why your certification body asks in the application whether you received advice, and from whom. Consultancies with support as their core service are listed under implementation partners.

Frequently asked questions

May my certification body advise me?

No. A certification body may not help build a system that it certifies itself. General explanation, such as training for everyone, is allowed.

Can an adviser guarantee me a certificate?

No. The certification body decides on the certificate, and the audit assesses what you do. A guarantee of the certificate is a reason to ask further questions.

Do I need to hire a consultancy?

It is not required, but it can speed up the process considerably. A consultancy helps you set up your management system and prepares you for the audit. Especially for companies without in-house quality expertise this is often valuable.

Am I committed to anything?

No, nothing at all. You are free to decline quotations, choose another certification body, or decide not to certify at all. No obligations, no small print.
