Did you know you can switch certification body at any time?
Without losing your certificate: your expiry date and three-year cycle simply continue. A recertification is no different from any other moment. The only difference: you need a new quote anyway, so comparing costs you nothing extra. How it works is explained under switching certification body.
Around the expiry date
Everything must be completed before the expiry date: the audit, resolving nonconformities and the decision.

| Up to 6 months late | Restore | The certification body can restore it if you still complete the recertification. The expiry date stays that of the old cycle; you do not get the months without a certificate back. |
| More than 6 months late | Start again | Restoring is no longer possible. At least a new stage 2 follows before you have a certificate again. |
If you miss the expiry date, you have no valid certificate from that day. An expired certificate also cannot be transferred to another certification body.

Frequently asked questions
When must recertification be completed?
Before the expiry date on your certificate. That applies to the audit, resolving nonconformities and the decision. So plan the audit well in advance.
What if my certificate has already expired?
Within six months the certification body can restore it if you still complete the recertification. After that, at least a new stage 2 is needed.
Can I simply change certification body?
Yes, you are free to change certification body. Under the international rules (IAF MD 2) you may switch as long as your certificate is valid and not suspended. Your current certification body may not withdraw your certificate just because you switch. The new certification body does carry out a short check of your file before taking over the certification. Am I committed to anything?
No, nothing at all. You are free to decline quotations, choose another certification body, or decide not to certify at all. No obligations, no small print.
